The Last Week Of First Grade & The Start To Summer Break!!!

This past week was Ruy's last week of First Grade.  I can hardly believe the school year is already over!  My little man will be in SECOND Grade this fall!  So crazy.

The last week of school was pretty low key.  We did school Monday and Tuesday, and then Wednesday we took a field trip to the Strawberry Patch.  We went with three other home-school families.  I am so excited about these three families.  God totally knew how much we all needed each other, and it really is amazing how he works...

I had been praying to meet a home-school family with a son Ruy's age.  I was at the park a few months ago with the kids, when another mom (Elizabeth) and her three kids walked up.  She had a son in First Grade, a daughter in Kindergarten, and a newborn baby girl!  They are Christians also!  She had also been praying to meet another family with a boy her son's age.  So, you can imagine how excited we both were!  We spent several hours talking, and enjoying watching our boys having a blast playing together.

Elizabeth introduced me to another home-school mom, with a son in First Grade, and then through her, we met another mom who home-schools her son!  Now, there are four of us, with boys, who home-school, and are Christians!  We are all super excited about how God has worked it out, and are all looking forward to the exciting things to come for the upcoming school year!

Anyways... back to our strawberry picking field trip :)  We had eleven kids there between the four of us.  The four older boys spent a large majority of the time wrestling, or talking about silly things that only boys would think are funny.  We picked strawberries, played on the playground, ate lunch under the shade of beautiful trees, and took a wonderful hayride.  The kids all had great time!

My Mom found a box turtle, and brought it over for the boys to play with for the day.  They thought it was awesome.

Thursday was Ruy's last day of school!  We had planned on celebrating with going out for ice cream but we got really busy packing for vacation, and then going to small group...it ended up not happening.  So, we decided we'd just get ice cream on vacation.

Friday, my sister brought her boys over to play with Ruy while she was seeing her Midwife.  They were in town for a few days, and Ruy was super excited to get to see his cousins.  They spent a lot of time in the creek, getting all wet and muddy!

What a great way to start off the Summer!!!

Half a year...

I can hardly believe it has already been that long since they placed your beautiful, little body into my arms for the very first time.  You have grown so much since then.  Your little personality is really starting to show.  You are such a sweet, silly, busy, beautiful, little girl.

You are reaching for everything at the table now.  Daddy and I let you have ice cream for the first time this month.  You went crazy over it.  You kept reaching for it, and then crying when I didn't give it to you fast enough.  We also let you have mashed potatoes, and applesauce.  You were not a fan of the mashed potatoes, but you liked the applesauce.

You have started to push up onto your knees.  I'm sure you will start scooting soon.  I'm not sure I'm ready for that!  You are already so wiggly, and you roll around so much!  You never want to hold still unless you are in the Ergo, and even then you are usually pushing your head back to see what is going on around you.

Grammy and Pappy got you a new toy, a doll (with all sorts of chew rings, and bright colors) that you just love.  It hooks onto your car seat.  You like to play with her while we are driving.  Bunny and blanket are still your favorite though.  Daddy and I wonder how long it will take before Bunny's ears start to fall a part.

Your hair has finally started to grow back in.  It's a beautiful blonde color. I thought your hair was going to come back in as dark as it was when you were born, but I guess I was wrong.  I don't think you will have curly hair like Liam though.

Your sleep schedule is still the same.  You sleep 6-12 hours in your bed.  You usually get in bed with me around 5AM, and then nurse in bed with me until 7AM when we all get up.  You take two long naps typically from 10-12, and then from 1-4.  Then you take a short nap in the Ergo around 6 most nights.  If not, I just put you to bed at 7:30PM.

You like to hold onto my ear while I am holding you.  You have not wanted me to put you down much lately. But then again, I don't want to put you down much either!  I like to have you close to me as much as possible.  I'm so thankful for the Ergo!

Ruy has started to dance with you while he is holding you.  You love it.  Liam, wanting to be like Ruy, has started only wanting to hold you if he is standing.  Of course, I am helping him hold you, but it makes him feel like a big boy.  Liam also likes to say "Look Mommy, that's Alanna Colette!"

Every morning, after you wake up, you look up at me with your beautiful blue eyes.  They are filled with so much love.  You smile at me with the biggest, happiest smile.  Your little nose wrinkles up when you smile really big!  It's the cutest thing!  You reach up at me with your tiny hands, and touch my face so sweetly.  You coo and laugh. If Daddy is still home from work when we wake up, you love to play with him.  You will look at him with the same loving look.  It melts Daddy completely!  We love you so very much, and can not imagine life without you.

~Happy Six Months Alanna Colette~

A Funeral, Two Graduations, and One Tired Family!

Last week was unusually busy for our family.  We were on the go every.single.day!  And by the end of the week, we were all pretty over it.  I'm trying to keep this week a little more low key.

Here is how our week went...

Monday, the kids and I went to the Zoo with my best friend and her three daughters.  Tuesday I took Johanna and Ethan back to my sister after watching them for almost two weeks.

On May 2, Nathan's grandmother passed away.  Her funeral was scheduled for Thursday, May 8. We left for Pennsylvania Wednesday at 11AM.  We arrived in PA around 5PM.  We got checked into our hotel and then headed out to dinner.  The kids were so tired of sitting, Liam hadn't had a nap, and Alanna had only slept off and on.  Ruy was super good through the entire dinner, but Alanna cried almost the whole time, and Liam...well he was cranky, had no desire to sit, and didn't really like his dinner.  I split my dinner with Liam, and I had to agree with him, it was pretty bad.  Liam and Alanna ended up crying so loud, that I decided to just take the kids outside and let them run around.

The boys on the way up to PA

After the kids ran around for a few minutes, we headed back up to the hotel room.  We gave the kids a bath and got them ready for bed.  Nathan's Mom sent us a message letting us know that everyone was meeting up at Friendly's at 8:15PM for ice cream.  Ruy and Liam really wanted ice cream, and we don't get to see Nathan's family very often, so I decided to go.  Friendly's gave the boys balloons so that kept Liam pretty happy the whole time we were there, which ended up being about an hour and a half.

We got the boys to bed just before 10PM.  I nursed Alanna to sleep in bed with me, and after the boys fell asleep, I moved her into her crib.  I didn't sleep well the whole night.  Ruy and Liam woke up at 6:15AM.  I tried till almost 7AM to get them back to sleep but finally gave up when Alanna woke up.  I turned on Curious George and started getting ready for the Viewing.  We all got ready, had breakfast, and arrived at the Viewing just before 10AM.

The Viewing was from 10-11AM.  I spent the hour talking with some of Nathan's family, but mainly just trying to keep Liam from messing anything up.  The service started at 11AM.  Liam munched on some goldfish through the whole thing, so he was pretty content.  It was a beautiful service.  Nathan's Gran was a wonderful person.  She was a great Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.  She was loved by so many people.  I wish I could have known her better than I did.  She had Alzheimer's and when I met her five years ago, it was just starting to become really noticeable. I am thankful for the time I did get to spend with her though, and I know she will be missed terribly.

This is the last picture we had taken of us with Nathan's Gran.  Her first and only time meeting Alanna. This was earlier this year.

We went to Nathan's Uncle's house for lunch from 1-3PM, and then headed back home.  Liam slept on and off for about an hour but that was all.  He does not sleep well in the car.  Alanna doesn't sleep well in the car van either.  She either wants her crib, my bed, or the Ergo.  I had to sit in the back of the van next to her the whole way home to keep her from screaming.  We got home at 8:30PM, unloaded the van, and got the kids to bed.

Friday, Nathan's brother Mike was graduating from Medical School.  We left the house at 10:30AM to meet up with Mike, his wife Andrea, and Nathan's parents for lunch at 11AM.  We were at the restaurant until 12:45PM.  After two days of traveling, and sitting through dinners and funerals, my kids were not really excited about another day of sitting still.  The boys were very good through lunch though.  Alanna was not so happy.  She was really exhausted.  She had slept 13 hours Thursday night, trying to catch up on her sleep.  I had to wake her up 10 minutes before we left for lunch.  So she cried through most of lunch on Friday.

We took the boys to a park for about an hour before we had to go to Mike's graduation.  The graduation started at 3PM, and lasted until 5PM.  I knew Liam was not going to sit through a two hour long graduation after going without a nap for three days.  I was right...he lasted all of about 30 minutes.  I spent the rest of the time trying to get Alanna to fall asleep in the Ergo, and playing with Liam out in the hallway.  There were about 10 other mothers out in the hall, doing the same thing as me.  Nathan spent the last 45 minutes helping me with Liam.  He was able to go back in and see Mike graduate.

Nathan's brother Mike, and Mike's wife Andrea.

The boys were hungry again by the time the graduation ended, so we all went to Cook Out for dinner and milkshakes.  Alanna had really had enough by this point.  She was trying so hard to go to sleep in my arms, but she just could not relax.  She finally stopped crying when Nathan's dad gave her a taste of his ice cream!  She loves ice cream!  Every time I give her a little taste, she cries for more, and reaches for it.  We finally headed home around 7:30PM.  We got the kids to bed, watched a show, and then crashed.

Saturday morning, Ruy had a baseball game at 9AM!!!  Seriously!  I was really wishing it was an afternoon game when I woke up at 6AM.  It turned out to be a very nice morning though.  It was beautiful outside, and I love watching Ruy play, so it was all good.

We went home, and Nathan left straight away to go work on a project with our Church.  I had just put a pizza in the oven for lunch when Nathan came home.  It was only 12PM.  I hadn't expected him home till around 2PM, but the project that the church group was working on had fished up early, and was done by the time he got there.  I could tell when I saw him that he had something on his mind...

Nathan's graduation from Liberty University was that afternoon, but he had decided weeks ago that he didn't want to go.  I had a feeling a few days before Saturday, that he was kind of wanting to go though.  So when he got home Saturday, I asked him "are you wanting to go to your graduation?"  He said yes, but wasn't sure if we could make it on time.  We would need to leave at 12:30PM to get to his graduation on time!!!  I rushed around like a crazy person for thirty minutes...feeding everyone, packing up the diaper bag, grabbing extra outfit changes for Alanna and Liam, snacks, water, Nathan's uniform, the Ergo, toys, etc.  We left at 12:40PM!!!  I think that was the fastest we ever got every one ready and out the door.

We made it to Liberty in good time, but the traffic was terrible once we got into the parking area.  It took us about 45 minutes to get through traffic and get parked.  You can imagine how tired the kids were all feeling at this point.  I had to sit in the back of the van with Alanna again.  Once we parked, we had a good walk before we reached the building where Nathan was graduating in.  We got into the building 15 minutes before the graduation started!  We felt pretty good about that.

I just stayed up on the very top section so that Liam could move around.  We could see Nathan from where were were at though.  He sat on the back row to make it easy for us to find him.  I was so proud of him when I heard his name being called!  The boys and I cheered for him.  Nathan worked so hard for this.  I can't tell you the hours he spent writing papers long after the kids and I were fast asleep!  And he did it on top of working two jobs.  He is such a hard working man!

Sunday was Mother's Day!  We went to church and then spent the rest of the day at home.  All I wanted for Mother's Day was to not go anywhere!!! {other than church} So we had lunch, gave Liam and Alanna a nap, played outside, colored, took a walk, and ate Ramen noodles for dinner!  How's that for a Mother's Day dinner! :)  I didn't care.  I had no desire to cook, and no desire to go out to eat!  And, I didn't even take one picture the whole day!  GASP!  We just took so many pictures or had some one else taking our picture so much during that week, that I didn't even want to get my camera out. Sunday night ended with Nathan and I having a quiet hour to ourselves, watching a TV show.

So there you have it...now you know all about my crazy week. :)

Eleven Days With Five Kids.

My sister Selina, and her husband Brent, are on deputation to be missionaries to South Africa.  Their burden is orphans.  They will be opening orphanages there in South Africa once they raise all of their support.

They have seven children.  Four of their children are biological, and the other three were adopted from China within the past four years.  Selina is pregnant with their eighth baby...due in August! I love all of my nieces and nephews so much and can't wait to meet my newest nephew!
Brent, Selina, Ellie (12), Nathaniel (9), Noah (7), left for South Africa on a survey trip on April 26, and came home today, May 6.  I watched two of their children, Johanna (16), and Ethan (5), while they were gone.

Selina has been so excited about this trip.  She and Brent have been planning it for over a year now.  I am excited to hear all about their trip once they return.  If you would like to read more about my sister's family and their ministry, you can read her blog The Bergey Bunch and their ministry website Little Fish Ministries

It was interesting adding two more kids to my three.  I thought it would feel strange having to take two more kids out every where I went, but honestly...it felt really normal.  It really made me want to have more babies actually :) Johanna was a big help this week.  She especially loved helping out with Alanna.  Ethan enjoyed playing with Ruy and Liam.  Ethan, Ruy, Nathaniel, and Noah are all SO close.  Ruy was sad that Nathaniel and Noah didn't stay here with us as well :)

Selina brought the kids to me on Friday, April 25.  She had to leave early Saturday morning, so it was better that she brought them the night before.  Nathan set up a bunk bed in Alanna's room for Johanna and Ethan to sleep on and we moved Alanna's crib back into our room for the 11 days they were staying with us.  Selina got them all settled in and then we went to CFA for dinner.  I let Liam sit with all the "big" kids for the first time.  He thought it was pretty awesome!

The kids had a really good time.  I tried to keep them busy so they didn't think about missing their parents too much.

Ethan and Liam had lots of fun playing trains!  Please ignore the boy's "blanket" curtains!  My mom is working on making curtains for them, so blankets are working as curtains for them right now :)

We went to the park last Sunday evening and the kids had fun playing in the sand and the water.  It took a lot of work keeping them from jumping into the water!

It rained Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday last week.  By Wednesday the kids were really ready for the rain to just go away.  They were all tired of being stuck inside, and I was too.  Nathan was on duty at the Fire Station Wednesday.   We went to the station Wednesday morning, and then to the Children's Museum for a few hours in the afternoon.  Johanna and Ethan had never been to a fire station before, so they were very excited about going.  They both really enjoyed it.  We ended the night with homemade pizza and ice cream cones.

Ethan wanted to wear all of Ruy's fire gear to the station.

This little boy LOVES fire trucks!  He was yelling "fire truck" when I took this picture.

Thursday was a stay at home day.  Nathan's truck was in the shop getting worked on, so he had to take the van to his part time job.  We spent the day at home, just enjoying a day of sunshine.  My Mom came over at 11AM and took Johanna out for lunch.  I sent the boys outside to play after Johanna left, and soon found all three boys out in the back yard covered in mud!  Our yard was pretty much nothing but mud after all the rain we had.  Ruy decided it was a good idea to dig a big hole in the corner of our yard.  I reminded him that he is not allowed to dig in our yard.  He said " Mom, that's not yard...that's just mud!"  Really Ruy!  Liam had fun jumping into it though, and Ruy and Ethan had a big mud fight.  I had an interesting time getting the three of them washed off, but I was glad they had so much fun getting dirty.

After I got the boys cleaned up from the mud... we went out front and raced cars down the driveway and colored with chalk.  Johanna came home, after enjoying lunch and a fun ride in Nana's car.  I put the little boys and Alanna down for a nap, Ruy and Johanna colored, and I had a few quiet moments to myself.

Later Thursday afternoon, Ruy and Ethan came running into the house telling me they had something to show me.  Ruy had taught Ethan how to ride the "big boy bike!"  Ruy was so proud of himself for teaching Ethan, and Ethan was so excited for learning how to ride!

Friday we went to Jamestown.  My Mom and Nathan were both able to come with us!  My Mom brought lots of yummy food.  The kids had such a wonderful time!  It was so much fun watching their smiles and hearing their laughs.  Children make life so much more exciting!

Saturday was my 26th birthday.  We started out the day by going to Ruy's baseball game.  Ruy won the game ball!  He was said he won it for me.

We spent the rest of the afternoon at home.  My Dad got Papa Johns for everyone.  Nathan's parents, brother, and sister in-law came over as well.  Later that evening we went to Qdoba for dinner.  Alanna decided it would be a good idea to pull my tacos down onto my lap....never a dull moment with kids :) It was a nice day though and I'm excited to see what the next year will bring.

Sunday night Liam rode his bike for the first time!  I was so proud of him.  He was so excited!  I guess it was a good week for boys to learn how to ride bikes!  Then we took a walk with all the kids.  It was such a beautiful evening.

Selina and Brent landed back in America this morning.  Selina and Brent had a VERY LONG DAY, but I was able to bring Johanna and Ethan to them around 7 this evening.  They were beyond excited to be back with their family.  I'll miss their sweet faces, but I think everyone is happy to have life back to normal.  I'm sure they will sleep well tonight, back in their own beds, knowing Mommy is right next to them.
