Blueberry Picking

Monday morning, I woke up wanting to go blueberry picking!  Nathan was off of work, and it was going to be the only day this whole week that would probably work out for him to go with us.  So, after Alanna's morning nap and some lunch...we headed out to the Berry Farm.

It was really hot on Monday.  Actually, it has just been REALLY hot pretty much every day lately.  But even in the heat, we stayed for an hour and got a lot of yummy blueberries.  Having Nathan there was a huge help.  I would never have been able to pick almost 4 pounds of blueberries in that amount of time without him.

Liam picked a lot of "delicious" blueberries, which were really unripe blueberries.  But he kept picking them and saying they were delicious.  He finally started to realize that we only wanted ones that were...Blue :)

Ruy did a wonderful job picking blueberries this year.  He was having fun eating them too.  He mainly only likes to eat the really big ones.  He is kind of picking when it comes to blueberries.

Alanna spent pretty much the whole time in the Ergo.  She rode on my back in the Ergo for the first time for a little bit.  But then she wouldn't stop crying so I moved her to the front thinking that would help.  It only helped for a little while.  She got so hot and tired, it just got to be too much for her.  So, after an hour...we bought our berries and headed home.

When we got home, I put Liam and Alanna down for a nap and then Ruy actually asked if he could take a nap too.  So all three of the kids slept for 2 hours.  I took advantage of that time to make a blueberry cobbler.  Oh my!  It was SO delicious!!! After dinner, we had the cobbler with vanilla ice cream.    We ate over half the pan after dinner.  And then after the kids went to bed.... well there wasn't any cobbler left when Nathan and I went to bed! :)

Blueberries are amazing.  I'm planning on making another cobbler, some blueberry zucchini muffins, a blueberry pie, blueberry parfaits, and just eating them plain!

I'd love to hear what your favorite recipes with blueberries are!

Here is the recipe I used to make the Blueberry Cobbler...

You can find the original here

(I made a few minor changes to the original recipe so I thought I'd post exactly what I did.)

Ingredients:

3 1/2 Cups blueberries
2 Cups sugar
1 Stick of Butter
1 Cup All Purpose Flour
pinch of baking soda
1 Cup Buttermilk*  I didn't have buttermilk so I used 1 Cup milk with 2 tablespoons vinegar (let sit for 10 minutes)
1 tsp. vanilla  *I didn't have vanilla so I used .5 tsp of almond extract

Directions:

Melt butter and pour into an 8 x 11 baking dish.

Heat blueberries in 1C sugar to a boil*. (I didn't see my berries "boiling."  They cooked for a few minutes on medium heat.  I stirred them frequently, and when I started to hear a sizzling sound, I turned them off.)
Stir frequently. Pour berries in baking dish over melted butter.

Mix 1C sugar, baking soda, flour, buttermilk and vanilla by hand. Drizzle over blueberries

Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour or until top is golden brown.

Enjoy plain or with vanilla ice cream on the side!!!  Either way is delicious!!!
